Aslan - One of the Great Bands of Our Time
One of the great things about the internet is that through platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and others you can have access to artists you might not otherwise know about. Whether it's a new artist or an established one still making great music, you can keep up with just about any artist anywhere in the world.
One such established artist that has come across my radar recently is Ireland's 'Aslan'. I was introduced to them via a cover of one of their big hits by fellow Irish band U2.
When I heard the song I had to check out this band 'Aslan'. I was not disappointed! They have been making music since the mid 80's and still perform today and put on incredible live shows. Here is a video of Aslan performing their original version of 'This Is':
Christy Dignam is one of the great rock n' roll front men of our time. He has a great voice and is a phenomenal performer. He's very animated and emotive onstage, reminding me of David Bowie or Mick Jagger. The band's music is influenced by everyone from the Beatles, Stones, and Bowie, to The Smiths and Oasis. 'This Time' is another of their big hits and this is one of the best live performances of it I found:
'This Time' is taken from their 1994 album 'Goodbye Charlie Moonhead'. At the end of the 80's the band split for a few years and this was their first album released after regrouping. It is a fantastic album garnering praise from critics and hit singles like 'This Time' and 'Crazy World':
This is one of their later songs recorded around the time the band were celebrating 25 years together. The song really has a Beatles sound to it:
Aslan have several shows scheduled in Ireland throughout the rest of 2019 and into 2020. Head on over to the band's official site or their Facebook page for more info and updates. They post quite a few videos of more recent live performances which I've really been enjoying.
You can check out their album 'Goodbye Charlie Moonhead' on Spotify, and then head over to the band's website to pick up the vinyl edition!
For a more extensive selection of the band's music visit the iTunes Store or Apple Music. Hope you enjoy discovering and experiencing this great band as much as I am! Let me know in the comments what you think of the band. Were you already familiar with them? What songs stand out to you?
